Jersey Newsletter – June 2024
JerseyNZ Annual Conference
This year’s Annual Conference, held in Rotorua from the 14th to 16th of May, was once again a successful event in the JerseyNZ calendar. The Conference brought together breeders and industry experts for a three-day Conference including interesting keynote speakers, consisting of Mea Motu, Todd McClay and a discussion panel facilitated by Dr. Jacqueline Rowarth. The contingency also visited Peter & Pam MacDonald’s farm in Rerewhakaaitu and the Conference ended with celebrating members’ achievements in both the Jersey scene and in Competitions.
You can read the full article in the upcoming June Jersey Focus. Keep an eye out for the location for 2025’s Conference! We are also on the lookout for anyone who is interested in being part of the Conference Committee. See more details in this newsletter.

Annual General Meeting 2024
Jersey NZ invites all members to attend the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 26 September at 1.00 pm at Waikato Innovation Park.
The 2024 Annual General Meeting will be a hybrid meeting. That means that you can either join us in person, or online. While we do hope that many members (especially local) will attend the meeting, the ability to also join via Zoom will enfranchise all members. Afternoon tea will be provided.
Please register to attend by filling out our ONLINE FORM or emailing Pam Goodin at pgoodin@jersey.org.nz by Friday 20 September and indicate if you will be attending in person or via zoom so that we can plan accordingly.
Ian Harris Memorial Heifer Competition
The Ian Harris Memorial Heifer Competition is a production, TOP and fertility-based competition for young breeders in two age categories with cash prizes totalling $350.
- Junior (8 – 17 years)
- Senior (18-35 years)
The cash prizes offered do not currently have a sponsor, and this opportunity is now open to members. If you would like to provide sponsorship in the form of $350 cash and have your name associated as sponsor of this competition (but not competition naming rights), please contact Pam Goodin on 07 856 0731 or pgoodin@jersey.org.nz
Semen Fee Buyout
The early semen fee buyout fee has increased to $150 + GST per bull.
The Semen Buy out fee covers additional processing that JerseyNZ may have to complete should a bull have semen collected and distributed for use whether within New Zealand or in overseas markets. Any company, partnership or member is required to complete the semen buy-out process if they have (or intend to) distributed semen for other’s use.
For more information on the Semen Fee Buyout, check out https://www.jersey.org.nz/semen-fee-buy-out-options/
Annual Conference Committee
Are you interested in helping to plan exciting and informative Annual Conferences? The Organising Committee are looking for more interested members to join the Committee. To find out more please give Pam Goodin a call on 07 856 0731 or pgoodin@jersey.org.nz by the end of July.
Director Vacancy
JerseyNZ advises members that at the close of nominations, one nomination had been received for Julie Pirie. As a result, Julie will become an elected member for the remainder of the vacant term.
This change will leave a vacancy for an appointed Director. The Director Appointments Committee will now work to appoint a new Director who will be confirmed at the Annual General Meeting in September 2024
World Wide Sires Photo Competition
This year’s Photo Competition will soon be available for member voting. It was a very tight competition in the preliminary judging which saw a reserve judge invited to choose between tied photos in some classes. Keep an eye out for voting which will open soon. Thank you to all members who entered this year’s Competition and to our sponsors, World Wide Sires.
JerseyNZ Hall of Fame
Five finalists were named in April in the 2024 Jersey NZ Hall of Fame judged by members Cliff Shearer, Tony Luckin and Robert Hall. Two of these famed cows were inducted into the Jersey NZ Hall of Fame at the Annual Conference on 16 May 2024.
The finalists were:

- Kevilor Sameen – nominated by Barry Montgomery
- Oaklea Golden Faith – nominated by Don Shaw
- Cardrona Fjord Bethany – nominated by Peter Allison
- Big Hollow Omens Beauty – nominated by Barry Montgomery
Members nominated registered cows, alive or dead, for a variety of reasons including indexes; outstanding progeny; high production; On Farm results; show results; great cow families; and any other accomplishments worthy of consideration.
JerseyNZ is delighted to announce that the 2024 inductees into the JerseyNZ Hall of Fame are:
– Kevilor Sameen – nominated by Barry Montgomery

JerseyGenome
At the time of writing this newsletter, the first round of selections for the new 2024 JerseyGenome team is being selected. We had an overwhelming response to requests for DNA samples, with over 500 samples sent to GenomNZ.
Thank you to members for bearing with both JerseyNZ and CRV as we navigate a new process this year and sorting through such a large number of animals. The Working Group are continually working to refine the process and make it easier for members to be involved in this hugely successful programme. We know the programme is working, with the success of Glen Kaycee Sherlock JG still at the top of the RAS list and winning the JT Thwaites Sire of the Season award recently. You can read more on Sherlock’s success in the June Jersey Focus.
Members who submitted DNA samples will be contacted in the near future with results and whether their animal(s) have been successful in the naming of this year’s team. Thank you again to members for such a positive response this year, we look forward to announcing the 2024 team!
